Subject: Special Screening of the film "Jungle Book" for our students

Dear Sir,

On Sunday, November 27, 2016, I had the opportunity to watch the film, "Jungle Book" at your cinema and thought it was a wonderful film with a message for children.

After discussing about this film with the school section head and the teachers, we have decided that we should take our Std.10 (S S C) students to watch this film. Can you please arrange a special screening of the film on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 2.00 pm for our students? We have about 200 students, who will come to watch this film. Please arrange a cinema, which can accommodate all of them at one time so that the students can watch the film together.

Besides, the production values, the film excels in many areas, the dialogues are meaningful and full of motivational messages for the students. The characters of the film relate to real life characters and situations which are connected to the students' lives, which show them how to become responsible citizens, teach them correct habits of cleanliness and discipline.

Please let us know the cost per student as we have to collect the amount at the earliest.

Thank you,
 Yours faithfully,

Brian  THANKAPPAN,
Principal

Reading Skills - Std.XII, H S C Board - No Fear

Extract 1 (Textbook pages 189 and 190)
Scene: A basement room ........................................................... where they had that bulldog.

Rewrite the extract as if Tom is the narrator.

I saw that we were getting soaked in the rain, and suggested standing in the doorway. Alfie was wearing his best suit, and there would be trouble if he went home in a wet suit. I told Alfie to get in the doorway, and then found to my surprise that the door was open. We looked in and saw that it was a weird looking place. Alfie did not want to go in, but there was no one to stop us, and I called out to Ginger and George to get in the house and out of the rain. Ginger was afraid that we would be caught for breaking into a house but George in his superior manner said that we had not broken in, as the door was unlocked. I said that no one would mind us taking shelter from a storm like the furious one  outside. George now accused Ginger for picking the wrong night to go carol-singing. Ginger asked George for a torch, since it was dark. I remarked that it was an odd place and wondered if there was anybody in the house. George also blamed me of choosing three empty houses to sing and then realizing that mistake only after we had finished singing, 'While Shepherds Watched.' I replied that it was better than what he had done -  picking the house that had the bulldog.

Extract 2 (Textbook pages 190)
George (contemptuously) ................................................................ keen on adventure.

Convert the extract into a short continuous write-up in about 120 words. You may begin as follows: 'George wasn't afraid of the bulldog . . .'

George said that he wasn't afraid of the bulldog. Tom was worried that Alfie would get into trouble at home if the dog had torn off a bit of his suit, and on being told by Ginger that they had collected only eight pence half penny, Tom reminded them disgustingly that money was a bit tight in those parts. George added that it was too soon after Guy Fawkes' day for carol singing.

Suddenly they were startled hearing a scream. Alfie wanted to go home. George told everyone that they got scared very easily and this quality getting frightened wouldn't help them to become members of the 'The Do and Dare Club' that Bert Williams and he were running, as no member of the club must ever show any sign of any fear. Tom told George that if that was the condition, the club would not have any members, as everyone was afraid of something at sometime. George answered him that their club was for bold young  and adventurous and not for children.

PRIDE - Essay - Std.IX - S S C

PRIDE

I take pride in what I do, I take pride in my results, I take pride that I get up early to attend football practice. Pride the feeling of satisfaction a person gets from his or her achievements. Pride is a person's self esteem, self respect, self worth, a belief in one's abilities. Pride increases our sense of identity.

When we achieve a goal, we feel good about ourselves. All our emotions and feelings of worth are boosted. Pride is greater when we have had to work hard for something as this makes the achievement more worthwhile.

Pride is an emotion that carries two sides, the positive and the negative side. On the positive side, pride is a product of praise, or a fulfilled feeling.  It is a satisfied sense of attachment toward one’s own or another’s choices and actions and may also effect a whole group of people. On the negative side, pride can give rise to a feeling of attitude and superiority over others.

Pride has to bring positive changes to the life of the person and to the world around, it is always about staying on top of things, living in harmony, being honest and committed to people.

Std 12 - H S C Board - As you like it - Writing Skills

Extract 1 (Textbook page 183)
Many years ago .......................................................................... the head of the family.

Extend the above extract by adding an imaginary paragraph of your own in about 120 words.

One fine summer day Oliver and Orlando were both out hunting in the forest when they saw a beautiful young girl picking flowers. At that very instant both of them fell in love with her. Her name was Rosalind. On reaching home, Orlando made a beautiful bouquet and wrote a special poem for Rosalind and decided that he would send them to her.

Oliver saw the bouquet and read the poem. He was heart-broken to know that he and his brother had fallen in love with the same girl. A wicked idea entered his mind and he decided to put his name at the end of the poem and knew that Rosalind would surely return his love. He was young, handsome and also the head of the family. As he picked up his pen to write his name, he heard Orlando's voice in the distance and he stopped. What was he to do now?
_________________________________________________________________________________

Extract 2 (Textbook page 184)
Oliver was hard and selfish ............................................... I'll never wrestle again.

Rewrite the conversation between Charles and Oliver in the form of a dialogue.

Charles: Your brother, Orlando has challenged me to a fight. Please stop him from wrestling with me.
Oliver: Why do you say that? After all it's a match.
Charles: I am a professional wrestler, Sir. Anyone who fights me runs the risk of being badly hurt. Please warn your brother.
Oliver: It's alright. If Oliver thinks he can fight you, you should show him how good you are and he probably deserves the punishment you give him.
Charles: I thought I should warn you and ask you to persuade him to change his mind.
Oliver: I would be happy if you broke his neck instead of his finger.
Charles: If that's the case, I'll do my best to kill him.
Oliver: You have my permission to do whatever you like with him.
Charles: If he comes to the fight tomorrow, I'll see that he gets punished.
Oliver: Are you sure you can defeat him?
Charles: If he can still walk after I have finished with him, I will never wrestle again. This is my promise to you.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Extract 3 (Textbook page 184)
Next day the wrestling match ........................................... she whispered to her cousin.

Rewrite the above extract from the point of view of Orlando. You may begin with.
The wrestling match between the wrestler Charles and me was arranged to take place in front of the Duke's palace.

The wrestling match between the wrestler Charles and me was arranged to take place in the Duke's palace in the presence of the Duke. Celia and Rosalind too stayed back to watch the fight. Frederick tried to persuade me not to fight but I was determined to fight and the Duke asked the girls to persuade me again. I also knew that Charles had just fought three other men and had nearly killed them and I too should expect the same treatment. The girls too knew this risk and pleaded me not to go ahead with this fight and assured me that I would not be called a coward if I did not fight. Rosalind also said that she would ask the Duke to stop the wrestling match.

I told the girls not to be angry and said that I could not do what they wished and to wish me good luck  as I went in for the fight. No one would be sorry if I was killed as I had no friends to love me and I was just filling up a place in  the world which could be taken by another man. The girls wished that they could give me all their strength. Charles arrived for the fight and I saw Celia look at him angrily and whisper something to her cousin.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Extract 4 (Textbook pages 183 and 184)
The wrestling match began ............................................................................... to do him harm.

Rewrite the extract from the point of view of Orlando.

When the wrestling match began, everyone expected Charles to beat me to death and win as he was very huge and strong. But I knew a few tricks and luckily I managed to throw him on to the ground. This shocked everyone and Rosalind was happy and excited. The Duke had to stop the fight as Charles was wounded and could not speak.

After the match, the Duke came to meet me and asked me my name. I told him my name and also added that I was the youngest son of Sir Rowland de Boys. This information surprised the Duke and he got angry on hearing this. He said that my father was his enemy and if would have been happy to hear that my father was another person. I answered with great pride that it was an honour for me to be Sir Rowland's son and would not change this situation even to be the heir of the dukedom and the Duke left. Rosalind and Celia came up and praised me for my bravery and manner of wrestling. Rosalind took out a gold chain from her neck and gave it to me. She said that she wished she could give me more, but she was not rich. Rosalind took Celia and went away and I could not forget her. I had already fallen in love with Rosalind. I could not stay at the Duke's palace any longer as my friends told me that the Duke was angry with me. I was asked to leave the dukedom as the Duke was planning to bring harm to me.

Extract 5 (Textbook pages 185 and 186)
As you can imagine .......................................................................... winter and rough weather.

Based on the extract, write a brief dialogue of 8-10 sentences between Orlando and his servant Adam

Adam: Young master, we must leave this place immediately.
Orlando: Why? What has happened?
Adam: How should I say this? But this morning I heard that your brother is planning to kill you.
Orlando: What? Really!! Is it true?
Adam: Yes, young master, it is true. I heard your brother, Oliver discuss with his servant a plan to set your room on fire tonight and burn you to death.
Orlando: It's shocking! I don't believe it.
Adam: I heard it myself, young master. And if he fails in that, he says that he will find another way to murder you.
Orlando: What should I do now?
Adam:Let's leave right now, young master. We can go to the Forest of Arden and search for the real Duke.
Orlando: Us? Are you coming with me too?
Adam: Definitely, young master. I will never leave you. Let's leave at once, without telling anyone anything.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Extract 8 (Textbook pages 186 and 187)
The Duke Senior ................................................................................................................ again at two o'clock.

Rewrite the first three paragraphs of the extract from the point of view of the Duke Senior.

As my friends and I were sitting down to a meal one day a young man rushed out from the forest, with a sword in his hand and ordered us to stop eating. Surprised and a little worried, we asked him what he wanted. He replied in helplessness that he was dying of hunger and only wanted food. We immediately asked him to sit with us and offered him food, but he refused. He said that his old servant was in the forest dying of hunger and would not eat anything until his servant had first eaten.

My friends and I helped him bring his servant to our hiding place and we fed them both. I asked the young man who he was, he said that he was the youngest son of Sir Rowland De Boys. I was very happy on hearing this and welcomed him to my court in the forest.

office etiquette - Can I be friends with my boss?

office etiquette - Can I be friends with my boss?

A  decade ago, any HR professional worth hisher KRA sheet would have tut-tut ted at the idea of a friendship between a manager and hisher employees. How is one supposed to get work out of the minions and dole out orders if they think they are your friends, they'd rationalise. But not now. Companies are encouraging bosses to befriend their brethren. In the era of attrition and competition, bosses are the key differentiators in the retention game. Enter the friendly boss. He/she will take you out for drinks, foot the bill for team lunches and even send you a Facebook friend request. But with one caveat: he's friendly, not a friend.

THE BOSS IS IN
Befriending the boss may be common, but what you need to know is where to draw the line, says Swapnil Kamat, CEO of an executive education and training firm. Kamat's advice is to assess the boss' behaviour first. No two bosses are alike leadership styles are as diverse as the people leading. While some get the work done by creating camaraderie, some use the clique mentality and some just stay aloof, driving the team remotely. Assess how he/she behaves with you and some of their other reportees. Take your decision based on that. “Your professional equation shouldn't be affected because of or due to the lack of friendship,“ he says. Corporate grooming coach and etiquette trainer Suneeta Kanga says boss' friendships are different from regular workplace friendships.“You obviously can't be on back-slapping terms with himher. No touching, fist bumps or high fives,“ she says, “It's only a formal friendship.“
REQUESTING FRIENDSHIP
A study conducted by marketing firm Russell Herder found about a third of men who are connected to their supervisors on Facebook say the online relationship gives them a leg up at work. For one, peering into your boss' personal life gives you more to talk about offline. On the flip side, another study conducted by Robert Half International found 57% of managers feel uncomfortable when a staff member sends them a friend request.
But the boss calls the shots. Don't send him/her the request, let the first move come from that side. “As long as you are not berating your boss or your workplace across social media, it is perfectly acceptable to add your boss to your social networks,“ says Kamat.
Kanga suggests a fool-proof way to negotiate this conundrum: Have a double identity on Facebook. One work profile (with PRO as a suffix) and a personal one exclusively for people outside of office and never the twain shall meet. “Add the boss and even your office colleagues to your personal network if you maintain the proper digital profile,“ she says. This means: no rants, no minute-by-minute updates, no Facebook fighting, no silly forwards and 100 picture posts anything that can mar your impression professionally.

H S C Board - Std.12 - Reading skills - The Daisy

Extract 1 (Textbook page 171)

OW listen! ....................... How rich I am

Rewrite the extract by imagining yourself as the little daisy. You may begin with:

"I grew on the bank of a ditch . . ." {March 14}

I grew on the bank of a ditch and around me were some very beautiful flowers growing in the garden. I had snow white petals around a yellow center, like the rays of the sun. I was healthy and happy as the sun shone warmly and brightly on me. I did not mind when nobody saw me or admired me. I just turned to the sun and listened to the song of the lark high up in the sky.

It was Monday, and I was as happy as if it was a great holiday. The children were at school learning and playing. I however learnt from the sun and from the garden that God is kind and the lark too expressed these very same feelings through its song. How well he sings and flies! I am very lucky that I can see and hear, the sun shines on me and the forest kisses me. How rich I am!
_______________________________________________________________

Extract 2 (Textbook page 171)

In the garden close by ..................................................... brightly as silver

Q: Based on the extract, write a dialogue between the daisy and the lark.

Lark: Tweet! Hello little daisy. How are you?
Daisy: Pretty lark, I am fine thank you.
Lark: What a beautiful little flower you are, daisy!
Daisy: Me and beautiful? No, it is the tulips and the peonies over there who are beautiful.
Lark: No, you are very nice, with a golden heart and a silver dress.
Daisy: Oh! You think I am nice? Thank you!
Lark: Can I sing a song for you?
Daisy: Please sing a song for me, pretty lark.
Lark: Listen to my song. I need to go back after that.
Daisy: Thank you for that lovely song. I really liked it. What about the other flowers?
Lark: You are the most beautiful of all the flowers. Good bye!
_______________________________________________________________

Extract 3 (Textbook page 171)

How happy the daisy was ................................ pitied them sincerely.

Extend the extract by adding an imaginary paragraph of your own in about 120 words.

The little daisy decided to be friendly, as it had already had its moment of joy when the bird had kissed it with its beak. The next time it saw the bird, it called it and said, "dear bird, please talk and greet the tulips and peonies too. They are feeling hurt and unhappy."

"But," said the bird, "they are not as sweet and innocent as you. They are jealous of you and may be your enemies too."

"Yes, I know that," said the daisy, "they are not very kind. That is why I want them to see what act of kindness can do. Please my friend, be nice to them too as you have been to me." The bird did what the little daisy wanted and today, the tulips, peonies and the little daisy are all good friends.
_______________________________________________________________

Extract 4 (Textbook page 172 and 173)
I wish I could console .................................................... desired to comfort it.

Q: Write a dialogue between the two boys after they see the dead bird.

1st boy: I have some very sad news. The pretty lark is dead.
2nd boy: Do you think it is because we put it in a cage?
1st boy: Yes, I think so. And there was not a drop of water in its bowl. We have been very careless.
2nd boy: You are right. We were very careless and this is the result.
1st boy: We should give it a nice burial at least now. We will put it in a nice box and dig a grave in our back yard.
2nd boy: We will also put some flowers around the grave and visit the grave often.
1st boy: Shall we get another bird to put in the cage?
2nd boy: No, never again. I think that it is wrong to put a bird in a cage.
1st boy: What about this piece of turf? There was a pretty flower on it and now that too is dead.
2nd boy: We have been a bit cruel with the bird, which wasn't right of us.

Board 2014 Questions and answers

Read the following extracts carefully. Imaginee that two girls or friends Anita and Sunita are conversing about the story event in the story extract. Write it in the form of a dialogue:

You may begin  with: "Anita: Poor bird! Nobody gave it even a drop of water in the evening."

Extract 1: (Textbook pages 171 and 172)

I wish I could ................................................... desired to comfort it.

Anita: Poor bird! Nobody gave it a drop of water in the evening. Even the daisy died.
Sunita: Those cruel boys forgot about them through the day and night. It seems the came back the next morning only.
Anita: I heard that they cried bitterly when they saw the dead lark.
Sunita: They put the bird in a red box and dug a grave and covered it with flowers.
Anita: What is the point of all this affection after cruelly killing it?
Sunita: While it was alive and beautiful and could sing, they forgot about it and killed it. Now they are crying over it and covered it with flowers.
Anita: And what did they do with the pretty little daisy?
Sunita: They simply threw it on the dusty highway. They are very cruel and unfriendly boys who have no love for nature and very careless.
_______________________________________________________________

Q2: Read the following extract carefully and convert it into a dialogue between the daisy and the lark: (October 2104)

You may begin with: "Daisy, why are you singing so sadly, little bird?"

Extract 2: (Textbook pages 172)

On the following morning ..................................... centre of the grass.

Daisy: Little bird, why are you singing so sadly?
Lark: It's because I have been caught and put in a cage, my friend, Daisy.
Daisy: Why have you been caged? Who has done this cruel deed?
Lark: Those two boys coming towards me. They are the ones who have dones this horrible deed.
Daisy: Oh, I wish I could help you, Lark! But what can I do? I am so small and helpless.
Lark: I am very frightened, they are coming here again, I think they want a piece of the turf.
Daisy: Oh Lark, what are they doing? They are cutting the turf all around me. I think they are going to hurt me to. Please help me.
Lark: Look Daisy, they are going away. It looks like you are safe for the moment.
_______________________________________________________________

Q3: Read the following extract and extend it by adding an imaginary paragraph of your own in about 120 words: (October 2104)

Extract 3: (Textbook page 172)

My throat is dry .......................................................... thought the daisy.

Barely had the lark finished its conversation with the daisy, came the sound of running footsteps. "Oh, little lark, I am sorry," said a sweet little girl's voice. "My brothers do not know what they are doing. They think that keeping you in a cage and providing you with food and shelter, you will be happy. I know that you want your freedom and don't like this prison like feeling. You want to fly away high into the sky. I am going to free you, little lark and you, pretty daisy, please forgive my brothers for their mistakes.

The door of the cage opened. The lark hopped out, kissed the little girl and flew high into the sky. The girl picked up the piece of turf with the daisy and put it back on the ground near the end of the garden. The little daisy touched the soft hand of the little girl gently with its petals.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Q4: Read the following extract and rewrite it from the point of view of the Daisy.

You may begin with: "Though it was only Monday, I was as happy as if it was a great holiday ..." (October 2014)

Extract 4: (Textbook page 171)

"The little daisy was as happy ..................................... at least to see all the splendour."

Though it was only Monday, I was as happy as if it was a great holiday. The children were at school learning and playing. I learnt from the sun and from my surroundings that God is kind and the lark too expressed these same feelings through its songs. He flies so well and sings nicely too. I am very lucky that I can hear and see, the sun shines upon me and the forest kisses me. I am very rich.

Oh, just look at those beautiful flowers over there. They are large and do not have much fragrance. Then why are those flowers so proud? And see the peonies, they have puffed themselves up to become bigger than the roses, it seems they don't know that size is not everything. The tulips have the best colours and they know it. They are standing straight like candles. How beautiful they look! I am sure that the lark will fly down to them. I go unnoticed in their presence. But I am lucky to be near enough to see their splendour.
