These days, conversations among youngsters are to the point. They also involve popular Internet slangs. The web can be a confusing place, even for someone who is using it every day because the language evolves on a daily basis. In fact, the words can transform language itself, so you need to know them to get by in real life.

AMA (Ask Me Anything)

It is a trend that started on Reddit, where, an authority on a subject is open for questions.

BAE (Before Anyone Else or Babe)

In Danish, it translates to poop! Unfortunately , the Internet thinks it is a word of endearment.

DAE (Does Anyone Else)

Generally a prefix for a question, where the person asking wants to know if they're not alone in whatever they're experiencing.

DM PM (Direct Private Message)

It is used to refer to content like phone numbers, address, photos, etc, which do not seem appropriate to be shared in public.

ELI5 (Explain Like I'm a 5-YO)

Ever been in a situation where can't understand a word? Well, `Explain Like I'm 5' is the word you're looking for, which is commonly used while explaining science or technology where you break it down in layman's terms.

FACEPALM (Urgh! You idiot!)

When someone does something stupid, your palm hits your head immediately because the level of geniusness shot through the roof.Long story short, it is used to convey disappointment, ridicule or disapproval.

Face Desk Head desk (The next level of facepalm)

When someone says or does something monumentally stupid that you've lost faith in their action or behaviour.

TIL (Today I learnt)

When you learn something that is not new, but innovative and you share it with your friends.

TLDR (Too Long Don't Read)

The Internet is a real treasure trove of detailed info, but sometimes, you just want the crux or a summary of the content quickly.

YOLO (You Only Live Once)

It's a justification for doing something that you probably shouldn't be doing but are doing it anyway . It's also used ironically as commentary to someone doing something idiotic.

TBT (Throw Back Thursday)

When you want to post an old photo, hold off till Thursday and tag it with #Throwback Thursday or #TBT. It's a sure-fireway to get attention online and has become a central part of the Internet's lexicon and used everywhere.

PAW (Parents Are Watching)

If kids want to avoid saying show something while their parents are around, PAW is a warning to the recipient. Of late, Code 9 is authorised, which means the same but yet to gain prominence.

NSFL (Not Safe For Life)

NSFL is now used for something that could possibly be offensive in a formal environment but alright if you're with friends.

ICYMI (In Case You Missed It)

One of the few times the Internet tries to be polite, ICYMI is just a precaution when you aren't sure if other people already know about something, or when you are repeating something you have said before. It's a way of saying, “You might have already seen this, but if not, here you go.“

Chinmay Foundation is an NGO established on August 24, 1997. Our foundation is actively involved in educational activities of underprivileged children.

On Sunday, November 27, 2016, I had the opportunity to watch the film, "Jungle Book" at your cinema and thought it was a wonderful film with a message for children.

After discussing about this film with the school section head and the teachers, we have decided that we should take our Std.10 (S S C) students to watch this film. Can you please arrange a special screening of the film on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 2.00 pm for our students? We have about 200 students, who will come to watch this film. Please arrange a cinema, which can accommodate all of them at one time so that the students can watch the film together.

Besides, the production values, the film excels in many areas, the dialogues are meaningful and full of motivational messages for the students. The characters of the film relate to real life characters and situations which are connected to the students' lives, which show them how to become responsible citizens, teach them correct habits of cleanliness and discipline.

Please let us know the cost per student as we have to collect the amount at the earliest.

Extract 1 (Textbook pages 189 and 190)
Scene: A basement room ........................................................... where they had that bulldog.

Rewrite the extract as if Tom is the narrator.

I saw that we were getting soaked in the rain, and suggested standing in the doorway. Alfie was wearing his best suit, and there would be trouble if he went home in a wet suit. I told Alfie to get in the doorway, and then found to my surprise that the door was open. We looked in and saw that it was a weird looking place. Alfie did not want to go in, but there was no one to stop us, and I called out to Ginger and George to get in the house and out of the rain. Ginger was afraid that we would be caught for breaking into a house but George in his superior manner said that we had not broken in, as the door was unlocked. I said that no one would mind us taking shelter from a storm like the furious one  outside. George now accused Ginger for picking the wrong night to go carol-singing. Ginger asked George for a torch, since it was dark. I remarked that it was an odd place and wondered if there was anybody in the house. George also blamed me of choosing three empty houses to sing and then realizing that mistake only after we had finished singing, 'While Shepherds Watched.' I replied that it was better than what he had done -  picking the house that had the bulldog.

George said that he wasn't afraid of the bulldog. Tom was worried that Alfie would get into trouble at home if the dog had torn off a bit of his suit, and on being told by Ginger that they had collected only eight pence half penny, Tom reminded them disgustingly that money was a bit tight in those parts. George added that it was too soon after Guy Fawkes' day for carol singing.

Suddenly they were startled hearing a scream. Alfie wanted to go home. George told everyone that they got scared very easily and this quality getting frightened wouldn't help them to become members of the 'The Do and Dare Club' that Bert Williams and he were running, as no member of the club must ever show any sign of any fear. Tom told George that if that was the condition, the club would not have any members, as everyone was afraid of something at sometime. George answered him that their club was for bold young  and adventurous and not for children.

PRIDE

I take pride in what I do, I take pride in my results, I take pride that I get up early to attend football practice. Pride the feeling of satisfaction a person gets from his or her achievements. Pride is a person's self esteem, self respect, self worth, a belief in one's abilities. Pride increases our sense of identity.

When we achieve a goal, we feel good about ourselves. All our emotions and feelings of worth are boosted. Pride is greater when we have had to work hard for something as this makes the achievement more worthwhile.

Pride is an emotion that carries two sides, the positive and the negative side. On the positive side, pride is a product of praise, or a fulfilled feeling.  It is a satisfied sense of attachment toward one’s own or another’s choices and actions and may also effect a whole group of people. On the negative side, pride can give rise to a feeling of attitude and superiority over others.

One fine summer day Oliver and Orlando were both out hunting in the forest when they saw a beautiful young girl picking flowers. At that very instant both of them fell in love with her. Her name was Rosalind. On reaching home, Orlando made a beautiful bouquet and wrote a special poem for Rosalind and decided that he would send them to her.

Oliver saw the bouquet and read the poem. He was heart-broken to know that he and his brother had fallen in love with the same girl. A wicked idea entered his mind and he decided to put his name at the end of the poem and knew that Rosalind would surely return his love. He was young, handsome and also the head of the family. As he picked up his pen to write his name, he heard Orlando's voice in the distance and he stopped. What was he to do now?

The wrestling match between the wrestler Charles and me was arranged to take place in front of the Duke's palace.

The wrestling match between the wrestler Charles and me was arranged to take place in the Duke's palace in the presence of the Duke. Celia and Rosalind too stayed back to watch the fight. Frederick tried to persuade me not to fight but I was determined to fight and the Duke asked the girls to persuade me again. I also knew that Charles had just fought three other men and had nearly killed them and I too should expect the same treatment. The girls too knew this risk and pleaded me not to go ahead with this fight and assured me that I would not be called a coward if I did not fight. Rosalind also said that she would ask the Duke to stop the wrestling match.

I told the girls not to be angry and said that I could not do what they wished and to wish me good luck  as I went in for the fight. No one would be sorry if I was killed as I had no friends to love me and I was just filling up a place in  the world which could be taken by another man. The girls wished that they could give me all their strength. Charles arrived for the fight and I saw Celia look at him angrily and whisper something to her cousin.

When the wrestling match began, everyone expected Charles to beat me to death and win as he was very huge and strong. But I knew a few tricks and luckily I managed to throw him on to the ground. This shocked everyone and Rosalind was happy and excited. The Duke had to stop the fight as Charles was wounded and could not speak.

After the match, the Duke came to meet me and asked me my name. I told him my name and also added that I was the youngest son of Sir Rowland de Boys. This information surprised the Duke and he got angry on hearing this. He said that my father was his enemy and if would have been happy to hear that my father was another person. I answered with great pride that it was an honour for me to be Sir Rowland's son and would not change this situation even to be the heir of the dukedom and the Duke left. Rosalind and Celia came up and praised me for my bravery and manner of wrestling. Rosalind took out a gold chain from her neck and gave it to me. She said that she wished she could give me more, but she was not rich. Rosalind took Celia and went away and I could not forget her. I had already fallen in love with Rosalind. I could not stay at the Duke's palace any longer as my friends told me that the Duke was angry with me. I was asked to leave the dukedom as the Duke was planning to bring harm to me.

We immediately asked him to sit with us and offered him food, but he refused. He said that his old servant was in the forest dying of hunger and would not eat anything until his servant had first eaten.

My friends and I helped him bring his servant to our hiding place and we fed them both. I asked the young man who he was, he said that he was the youngest son of Sir Rowland De Boys. I was very happy on hearing this and welcomed him to my court in the forest.

A  decade ago, any HR professional worth hisher KRA sheet would have tut-tut ted at the idea of a friendship between a manager and hisher employees. How is one supposed to get work out of the minions and dole out orders if they think they are your friends, they'd rationalise. But not now. Companies are encouraging bosses to befriend their brethren. In the era of attrition and competition, bosses are the key differentiators in the retention game. Enter the friendly boss. He/she will take you out for drinks, foot the bill for team lunches and even send you a Facebook friend request.But with one caveat: he's friendly, not a friend.

THE BOSS IS IN

Befriending the boss may be common, but what you need to know is where to draw the line, says Swapnil Kamat, CEO of an executive education and training firm. Kamat's advice is to assess the boss' behaviour first. No two bosses are alike ­ leadership styles are as diverse as the people leading. While some get the work done by creating camaraderie, some use the clique mentality and some just stay aloof, driving the team remotely. Assess how he/she behaves with you and some of their other reportees. Take your decision based on that. “Your professional equation shouldn't be affected because of or due to the lack of friendship,“ he says. Corporate grooming coach and etiquette trainer Suneeta Kanga says boss' friendships are different from regular workplace friendships.“You obviously can't be on back-slapping terms with himher. No touching, fist bumps or high fives,“ she says, “It's only a formal friendship.“

REQUESTING FRIENDSHIP

A study conducted by marketing firm Russell Herder found about a third of men who are connected to their supervisors on Facebook say the online relationship gives them a leg up at work. For one, peering into your boss' personal life gives you more to talk about offline. On the flip side, another study conducted by Robert Half International found 57% of managers feel uncomfortable when a staff member sends them a friend request.

But the boss calls the shots. Don't send him/her the request, let the first move come from that side. “As long as you are not berating your boss or your workplace across social media, it is perfectly acceptable to add your boss to your social networks,“ says Kamat.

Kanga suggests a fool-proof way to negotiate this conundrum: Have a double identity on Facebook. One work profile (with PRO as a suffix) and a personal one exclusively for people outside of office ­ and never the twain shall meet. “Add the boss and even your office colleagues to your personal network if you maintain the proper digital profile,“ she says. This means: no rants, no minute-by-minute updates, no Facebook fighting, no silly forwards and 100 picture posts ­ anything that can mar your impression professionally.
