H S C Board - Std.12 - Reading skills - The Daisy

Extract 1 (Textbook page 171)

OW listen! ....................... How rich I am

Rewrite the extract by imagining yourself as the little daisy. You may begin with:

"I grew on the bank of a ditch . . ." {March 14}

I grew on the bank of a ditch and around me were some very beautiful flowers growing in the garden. I had snow white petals around a yellow center, like the rays of the sun. I was healthy and happy as the sun shone warmly and brightly on me. I did not mind when nobody saw me or admired me. I just turned to the sun and listened to the song of the lark high up in the sky.

It was Monday, and I was as happy as if it was a great holiday. The children were at school learning and playing. I however learnt from the sun and from the garden that God is kind and the lark too expressed these very same feelings through its song. How well he sings and flies! I am very lucky that I can see and hear, the sun shines on me and the forest kisses me. How rich I am!

Extract 2 (Textbook page 171)

In the garden close by ..................................................... brightly as silver

Q: Based on the extract, write a dialogue between the daisy and the lark.

Lark: Tweet! Hello little daisy. How are you?
Daisy: Pretty lark, I am fine thank you.
Lark: What a beautiful little flower you are, daisy!
Daisy: Me and beautiful? No, it is the tulips and the peonies over there who are beautiful.
Lark: No, you are very nice, with a golden heart and a silver dress.
Daisy: Oh! You think I am nice? Thank you!
Lark: Can I sing a song for you?
Daisy: Please sing a song for me, pretty lark.
Lark: Listen to my song. I need to go back after that.
Daisy: Thank you for that lovely song. I really liked it. What about the other flowers?
Lark: You are the most beautiful of all the flowers. Good bye!
_______________________________________________________________

Extract 3 (Textbook page 171)

How happy the daisy was ................................ pitied them sincerely.

Extend the extract by adding an imaginary paragraph of your own in about 120 words.

The little daisy decided to be friendly, as it had already had its moment of joy when the bird had kissed it with its beak. The next time it saw the bird, it called it and said, "dear bird, please talk and greet the tulips and peonies too. They are feeling hurt and unhappy."

"But," said the bird, "they are not as sweet and innocent as you. They are jealous of you and may be your enemies too."

"Yes, I know that," said the daisy, "they are not very kind. That is why I want them to see what act of kindness can do. Please my friend, be nice to them too as you have been to me." The bird did what the little daisy wanted and today, the tulips, peonies and the little daisy are all good friends.

Extract 4 (Textbook page 172 and 173)
I wish I could console .................................................... desired to comfort it.

Q: Write a dialogue between the two boys after they see the dead bird.

1st boy: I have some very sad news. The pretty lark is dead.
2nd boy: Do you think it is because we put it in a cage?
1st boy: Yes, I think so. And there was not a drop of water in its bowl. We have been very careless.
2nd boy: You are right. We were very careless and this is the result.
1st boy: We should give it a nice burial at least now. We will put it in a nice box and dig a grave in our back yard.
2nd boy: We will also put some flowers around the grave and visit the grave often.
1st boy: Shall we get another bird to put in the cage?
2nd boy: No, never again. I think that it is wrong to put a bird in a cage.
1st boy: What about this piece of turf? There was a pretty flower on it and now that too is dead.
2nd boy: We have been a bit cruel with the bird, which wasn't right of us.

Board 2014 Questions and answers

Read the following extracts carefully. Imaginee that two girls or friends Anita and Sunita are conversing about the story event in the story extract. Write it in the form of a dialogue:

You may begin  with: "Anita: Poor bird! Nobody gave it even a drop of water in the evening."

Extract 1: (Textbook pages 171 and 172)

I wish I could ................................................... desired to comfort it.

Anita: Poor bird! Nobody gave it a drop of water in the evening. Even the daisy died.
Sunita: Those cruel boys forgot about them through the day and night. It seems the came back the next morning only.
Anita: I heard that they cried bitterly when they saw the dead lark.
Sunita: They put the bird in a red box and dug a grave and covered it with flowers.
Anita: What is the point of all this affection after cruelly killing it?
Sunita: While it was alive and beautiful and could sing, they forgot about it and killed it. Now they are crying over it and covered it with flowers.
Anita: And what did they do with the pretty little daisy?
Sunita: They simply threw it on the dusty highway. They are very cruel and unfriendly boys who have no love for nature and very careless.

Q2: Read the following extract carefully and convert it into a dialogue between the daisy and the lark: (October 2104)

You may begin with: "Daisy, why are you singing so sadly, little bird?"

Extract 2: (Textbook pages 172)

On the following morning ..................................... centre of the grass.

Daisy: Little bird, why are you singing so sadly?
Lark: It's because I have been caught and put in a cage, my friend, Daisy.
Daisy: Why have you been caged? Who has done this cruel deed?
Lark: Those two boys coming towards me. They are the ones who have dones this horrible deed.
Daisy: Oh, I wish I could help you, Lark! But what can I do? I am so small and helpless.
Lark: I am very frightened, they are coming here again, I think they want a piece of the turf.
Daisy: Oh Lark, what are they doing? They are cutting the turf all around me. I think they are going to hurt me to. Please help me.
Lark: Look Daisy, they are going away. It looks like you are safe for the moment.
_______________________________________________________________

Q3: Read the following extract and extend it by adding an imaginary paragraph of your own in about 120 words: (October 2104)

Extract 3: (Textbook page 172)

My throat is dry .......................................................... thought the daisy.

Barely had the lark finished its conversation with the daisy, came the sound of running footsteps. "Oh, little lark, I am sorry," said a sweet little girl's voice. "My brothers do not know what they are doing. They think that keeping you in a cage and providing you with food and shelter, you will be happy. I know that you want your freedom and don't like this prison like feeling. You want to fly away high into the sky. I am going to free you, little lark and you, pretty daisy, please forgive my brothers for their mistakes.

The door of the cage opened. The lark hopped out, kissed the little girl and flew high into the sky. The girl picked up the piece of turf with the daisy and put it back on the ground near the end of the garden. The little daisy touched the soft hand of the little girl gently with its petals.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Q4: Read the following extract and rewrite it from the point of view of the Daisy.

You may begin with: "Though it was only Monday, I was as happy as if it was a great holiday ..." (October 2014)

Extract 4: (Textbook page 171)

"The little daisy was as happy ..................................... at least to see all the splendour."

Though it was only Monday, I was as happy as if it was a great holiday. The children were at school learning and playing. I learnt from the sun and from my surroundings that God is kind and the lark too expressed these same feelings through its songs. He flies so well and sings nicely too. I am very lucky that I can hear and see, the sun shines upon me and the forest kisses me. I am very rich.

Oh, just look at those beautiful flowers over there. They are large and do not have much fragrance. Then why are those flowers so proud? And see the peonies, they have puffed themselves up to become bigger than the roses, it seems they don't know that size is not everything. The tulips have the best colours and they know it. They are standing straight like candles. How beautiful they look! I am sure that the lark will fly down to them. I go unnoticed in their presence. But I am lucky to be near enough to see their splendour.

Walk up the stairs, walk up the stairs - poem

Walk up the stairs
Walk up the stairs
If you're young and fit
Hale and hearty
Walk up the stairs.

Walk up the stairs
Walk up the stairs
If you don't walk everyday
Or don't run alternate days
You will need to walk up the stairs.

Walk up the stairs
Walk up the stairs
Count your calories
And not the steps
When you walk up the stairs .

Walk up the stairs
Walk up the stairs
You either visit your doctor
And swallow bitter pills
If you don't walk up the stairs.

Walk up the stairs
Walk up the stairs
Don't be lame and lazy
And walk down the stairs too.

Dining like a diva

Dining like a diva

From how to place your fork and knife after a meal to why you should pass the salt and pepper together, here are some dinner table rules that you should know
Good manners and etiquette help in defining oneself; and table manners introduce us even before we introduce ourselves. While we navigate social dos, it is imperative that we follow these rules of conducting ourselves. Here are pointers to consider while hosting or attending a formal dinner:WELCOME YOUR GUESTS
A handshake should be firm and eye contact is essential when you greet another person. Verify the food preferences of your guests in advance, and set the menu accordingly.
RESTAURANT MANNERS
While at a restaurant, never shout out to the waiter. Make eye contact. In case your eyes don't meet, raise your right hand with the index finger slightly raised to attract the waiter's attention. A guest is never seated at the head of the table and the guest of honour is to the right of the host. It is polite to make general conversation with the people seated around you.
LUGGAGE ALERT
Ensuring your bag doesn't come in the way of service or interferes with the ambience. Special bag hooks are available, which one can attach to the chair to hang your purse. You may carry one with you.Alternatively, a big bag may be kept under the chair or table. A clutch may be placed on your lap and your napkin should be placed over it.
POSTURE CONTROL
Table manners come to play from the moment you settle down for a meal. Lean slightly forward while eating, your spine should be in a straight, but relaxed position and not hunched over a meal. Ensure your torso is at a distance of two palms away from the table and keep elbows off the table while eating.
RESPECT YOUR GUEST-HOST
Do switch off or turn your mobile phone to `silent mode', it's a courtesy you owe your fellow diners.Chew with your mouth closed. Wait for everyone to be served before you commence eating.
DAB, BUT DON'T BLOW
Lay the napkin across your lap. You may use it intermittently to dab your lips, but never to blow your nose. If you need to excuse yourself from the table then leave your napkin on your chair. After the meal, leave it on the left side of the plate.
BUTTERING UP
Place your bread on the side plate and tear it one piece at a time.Butter your bread by placing it on the plate and never in midair.
SCOOP THE SOUP
Soup must be eaten with a motion of skimming the spoon away from you and scooping it up using the rim of the bowl. The bowl may be tilted away from you to finish the soup. Soup is always eaten, never drunk or slurped.
THE SALAD STATUTE
When eating a salad, never cut the leaves. Use your knife to fold the leaves and then pick them up with a fork. The prongs of the fork should be facing downwards.
PASS THE PARCEL
When asked to pass salt or pepper, you must pass both together, even if only one has been requested. Food should be passed from the right and received from the left.

Self-Discipline

Self-Discipline

“Once you have commitment, you need the discipline and hard work to get you there.” — Haile Gebrselassie
At the heart of any successful person, is self-discipline. Whether it’s success in their personal lives or their professional lives, it all starts with an inherent ability for self-control through discipline. Your thoughts. Your emotions. Your behaviors. And your habits. All of them must be kept in check.

If you want to achieve those goals you set, understanding how to discipline yourself is a key ingredient to the success recipe.

Theodore Roosevelt once said, “With self-discipline almost anything is possible.”

What successful people have come to understand is that discipline is the gateway to the achievement of their goals. They learned how to use discipline in their lives to achieve their dreams.

But how is discipline created or formed?
The answer to this question lies in our habits. Since 40% of our behavior is habit-driven, if you want to be self-disciplined, you have to control your habits.
In particular, there are habits that help you to discipline yourself. Without these habits, you’ll just be stabbing around in the dark.

Habits: The Pathway to Self-Discipline

Considering that so much of what we do on a daily basis is habit-driven, developing the right habits will help to instill the right amount of discipline into our lives.

If you can instill the following habits into your life, you’ll find that disciplining yourself becomes far easier. It won’t happen overnight. Remember that habits take time to form and to break. But, if you start small, and build, you won’t be wondering how you can discipline yourself any longer, since you’ll embody the particular habits that promote self discipline in life.

– Active Goal Setting
Goal setting instills discipline because it gives us direction. It also helps us to avoid distractions by seeing just what needs to be done in a given day. Without active goals, we’re left like a ship without a sail stuck in stormy waters.

To set goals, first you must set some long-term goals. If you have long-term goals, then you need to engage in monthly, weekly, and daily goal setting and planning. And you also have to actively track your progress towards your goals.

Every morning, create some daily goals for yourself and identify the most important tasks that need to be done in the day, and then, chase the frog, so to speak.

2 – Organization
To be self-disciplined and achieve our goals, we need to be organized. An organized life is a disciplined life. Begin by organizing one small space each day. For example, start by organizing your desk drawer. The next day, move onto organizing your cupboard. And so on.

Do one small thing a day to improve your organization. That’s all it takes.

Like all the other habits, the habit of organization can be slowly built up over time. It requires some effort and attention, but it will pay off enormously in the long run.

It’s the little things that we do on a daily basis that have a large impact on the quality of our lives. Pay attention to the small stuff and you’ll reap large benefits.

3 – Time Management
Without the habit of time management, it would be virtually impossible to get anything done.

When we can properly manage our time, we have room for the stuff that matters. We have room for the activities that will help us achieve our goals. In order to achieve our long-term goals, we have to perform actions that might not be urgent, but are most certainly important.

However, our ability for self-discipline is largely derived from our ability to effectively manage our time.

Since we all have the same amount of time in the day, we can’t waste it. It’s the great equalizer.

4 – Persistence
No set of discipline habits would be complete without persistence. Persistence is that certain habit that helps us to not give up. Even when we do fail, it allows us to get back up again.

Without the habit of persistence, self-discipline would be largely impossible.

Getting discouraged is easy. And giving up takes far less effort than continuing to push through.

What we need to do is realize that even the most famous people who succeeded in life have failed many times over. Failure is an important stepping-stone in life. Without failing, we couldn’t achieve the lofty goals that we set for ourselves.

The right way to do planks

The right way to do planks

If rock-hard abs and a sculpt ed six-pack is what you are looking for, then doing plank exercise is your best bet.Experts say that if done right, this is an effective exercise, which can give you stronger abs. If you are a regular at the gym, you would be aware that most fitness enthusiasts term this as a deceptively simple exercise. However, if you are a gym novice, you need to know that one can easily go wrong while doing planks and that may lead to injury .Swati Shah, wellness and fitness professional says, “The plank exercise is about maintaining a position that is akin to a push-up, for the maximum time one can hold. One of the key points to keep in mind is that your back should be tabletop straight, not arching or piking.“ Check out the illustrations to get it right..
Planks help to develop core strength and also works other muscle groups like your shoulders, arms and glutes
KEEP IN MIND
Fitness professionals say that it is important to know the difference between pain and discomfort when you do any kind of exercise.Weight management and lifestyle coach Amrapali Patil explains, “Discomfort is common when you are a beginner. Listen to your body and respond accordingly.“
When doing the plank, you should consciously contract your abdominal muscles advises Swati. She adds, “If you are a beginner, start with holding for only 30 seconds. Later, increase your timing to three minutes and then maybe till one whole song plays. That is a trick I use. The song motivates me to hold on to the plank position till it is over.“
COMMON MISTAKES YOU NEED TO AVOID
Don't hold your breath! This one is a basic mistake that many make. Agreed the posi tion is strenuous, especially so if you are a beginner, but you need to keep breathing.
Do not let your head droop when you are holding the pose.
Your head and neck are an extension of your back. Keep them all in one straight line.
Avoid reaching your butt to the sky -planks are not the downward dog pose.
Do not collapse on your lower back. Avoid dipping your butt.
Keep your spine straight to avoid spinal injuries.
Do not keep counting on the seconds you have to hold.
Quality is always better than quantity.
MAKE PLANKS WORK HARDER FOR YOU
Once you are a pro at planks, you can move on to the Elevated Planks -doing planks while your legs are on a stool or a table. You could also try Suspended Planks, wherein you do the exercise using a suspension trainer.

Will you brb? Deffo read this, then!

Will you brb? Deffo read this, then!

No, these aren't typos.
Internet slang has now found its way into a well-known dictionary
For some, this has come into the everyday language -from official emails to popchats, SMSes and more. And now, if you use this shortcut way of speaking -with words like `brb', `lol' and `ttyl' as well as current social terms like `glamping', you might be doing the right thing, linguistically! A wellknown dictionary has added popular abbreviations and slang to their line-up and it's going to shake up the way we all communicate. Here are a few of the latest additions you might relate to...TL;DR: Used as a dismissive response to a lengthy online post, or to introduce a summary of a lengthy post: `TL;DR-I just scrolled all the way down but that took forever'
BRB: Means `Be right back'.How many times you might have used that in short messaging?
ICYMI: This is definitely a much-used term. For those not in the know, it's a short for `in case you missed it.' Budgie smugglers: Budgie smugglers is an Australian term used since the 1990s that refers to a pair of tight men's swimming trunk. Stupid o'clock: A time of the day that is extremely early or late.
Glamping: A hybrid of glamour and camping, this involves accommodation and facilities more luxurious than traditional camping.Director Guy Ritchie set up glamping tents at his wedding venue.
GTG: Got to go.
LMAO: Another popularly used term, LMAO means `laughing my as off'. ROFL (rolling on the floor, laughing has made the list, too).
AFK: Away from the keyboard.
FWIW: For what its worth.
SYS: See you soon.
TBH: To be honest.
JK: Just kidding.
Bao: Fan of the Chinese steamed bun? It's in the dictionary now.
Listicles: These stand for online newspaper or magazine articles presented in the form of a list.
L8R: Later.
Deffo: Definitely
Dudette:
Meaning the gender opposite of dude.
