Dialogue - Childhood - its advantages

Dialogue - Childhood - its advantages

Basil: Is this your little boy, Ralph? What a fine little fellow! How old is he?

Ralph: Yes, he is my younger son and he is just over six years old.

Basil: Quite a big lad for his age! - You want to go back to your games, my little man? That’s right - run away! - He is a boy to be proud of, Ralph. He takes me back to my own childhood, the happiest times of my life.

Ralph: Yes, I agree, I had a good time when I was a boy, too.

Basil: I often wish I could be a boy again! No responsibilities, no business tensions, no knowledge of this wicked world.

Ralph: I completely agree with you, Basil. I was very happy as a child and I too wish to be a child again, sometimes, especially, when I see my little son.

Basil: Childhood is innocent and is not troubled with a guilty conscience. A child is full of hope and splendid dreams of what he will do and be when he grows up to be a man. It is a time of romance, when the whole world is beautiful and new and full of surprises.

Ralph: Yes Basil, when I look back on our childhood, we bring back a lot of romance. We forget all the worries of the present day and remember all the pleasant memories of the past.

Basil: A child’s troubles are very small - little trifles    , his tears are like a rain shower, soon over.

Ralph: To us grown ups, a child’s troubles always seem very trivial; but to a child, they are very real and very big. We are looking at their troubles from the grown-up standards and forget that when we were children, we suffered and felt miserable too.

Basil: Think of a child’s innocence!

Ralph: Yes, it was a very innocent time. as we grew older, knowledge comes, knowledge of good and evil. I still think that the innocence was better than knowledge. We were carefree.

Basil: I know, and would love to be a boy again and enjoy those happy-go-lucky days again.

Ralph: Basil, we should meet more often and talk about our childhood and keep those memories alive and I am sure we will be able to deal with the problems of our present lives in a much more relaxed and mature manner. It’s a good thing I brought my son to the park and met you on the way here and all because of him, we had this amazing conversation. See you, Basil, let me go and play with my son for sometime.
